Red Deer Painters
When talking about “finishes” and “sheens” it can get tricky to know which is the best. It’s common that most houses have “Eggshell”, but is it still the best?
Technology is transforming the way we use paint, and what kind of projects can be achieved. We used to use oil based paints on all of our walls, for durability and washability- now you can achieve a similar lifetime from water-based paints!

Here’s What You Need to Know About Sheen Levels

You can find most of these finishes across many product lines, but can vary in their durability. For example the “Flat” sheen level in a lower grade paint, Super Paint by Sherwin Williams, will have less washability than their higher grade Emerald products. If durability is important to you its best to pick the product that fits your needs.
What Finish Should I Use on My Walls?
With modern paint technology the choice really is yours. We saw a wave from 2020-2022 of Matte being a popular finish for walls. Matte is also a popular choice because of its super soft finish- the colour can really make a statement!
Eggshell has not fallen out of fashion however. It’s still very common for its tried and true qualities, and traditional shine.
Pearl(Satin) and Semi-gloss remain the most popular finishes for trim-work and doors.
So, what paint should you use? We recommend different sheens based on the situation, but the quality of paint matters most.
